Canada is set to legalize medically assisted dying for individuals grappling with drug addiction next spring, expanding the existing medical assistance in dying (MAID) law. The expansion, scheduled for March, will grant access to those whose sole medical condition is mental illness, encompassing substance use disorders. A parliamentary committee on MAID will review the new regulations before their implementation.
Under the current law, individuals are eligible for MAID if they have a "grievous and irremediable medical condition," which excludes mental illness. They must undergo two assessments from independent healthcare providers and meet specific criteria. The decision to include addiction-related cases has sparked controversy, with some labeling it as "eugenics."
