Residents of Ward’s Island are reeling after an early morning fire consumed the Ward’s Island Association Clubhouse, a cherished fixture in the community. The blaze, which also engulfed the Island Cafe housed within the structure, was reported just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. Firefighters battled the inferno, but the charred remains continued to smolder into Sunday afternoon. Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg stated that crews will remain on site overnight to investigate the cause of the fire. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the loss of this beloved landmark has left a significant void in the island's culture. Alison Gzowski, president of the Ward’s Island Association, expressed shock and sorrow, highlighting the deep-rooted memories and connections residents held with the clubhouse, which was built in 1937. Islanders frequented the cafe daily, viewing it as a vital gathering place for the community. Despite the devastation, Mayor Olivia Chow reassured residents of Ward’s Island that they are resilient and will work together to rebuild and continue operating throughout the summer season.
