According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), there has been a staggering 206% increase in violent carjackings between 2021 and 2023.
This week, in a collaborative effort involving the OPP, Sûreté du Québec, and Montréal police, 34 individuals were apprehended in a targeted operation aimed at combatting auto theft in Ontario. Deputy Commissioner Marty Kearns emphasized that all suspects were captured by the OPP after charges were filed against them, primarily for failing to appear in court or violating release conditions, leading to warrants for their arrest.
Kearns highlighted "Project Volcano" as an initiative to ensure accountability for these individuals in court. Initially reported as 31 arrests, the figure was later clarified to be 34 during a press conference in Hawkesbury, Ontario. Kearns also noted an alarming statistic of nearly 3,000 vehicles stolen in

Ontario within the past seven weeks alone.
