Ontario's police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), stepped in following an incident involving a collision in north Etobicoke on Friday evening.

According to a spokesperson for the SIU, Toronto police were responding to a reported break-and-enter at a business on Claireville Drive around 5 p.m. Upon arrival, some suspects fled the scene while others escaped in a vehicle, prompting a police officer to pursue them.

However, during the pursuit, the police cruiser was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Humberline Drive and Finch Avenue West. Notably, the vehicle involved in the collision was unrelated to the ongoing police investigation. As a result of the collision, a 61-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, while the officer involved was also taken to a trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU intervenes in cases where police are implicated in incidents resulting in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
