The Liberal government has committed $1 billion over the next five years to establish a national school food program in the upcoming budget, aiming to alleviate the financial strain on Canadian families amidst soaring grocery costs.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, announcing the initiative in Toronto on Easter Monday, emphasized its significance in providing parents with peace of mind. The objective is to extend support to an additional 400,000 children annually by expanding existing programs run by provinces and school boards.

With one in four Canadian kids facing food insecurity, the government aims to ensure that every child in the country has equal access to nutritious meals for a healthy life, aiming for implementation as early as the 2024-2025 school year.
